Magical Dig Day above Castle Rock’s Crags

Many shining moments of the Shared Stewardship model in action were on full display at today’s Castle Rock Dig Day, which was part of Save Mount Diablo's 5th Annual Pine Canyon Cleanup event.

So much gratitude for Save Mount Diablo and also the 19 Volunteers (aka, Trail Champions) who gave back so much to the trails and the State Park, driven by sheer dedication, hard work and a genuine team spirit.

Mission Accomplished
All major Castle Rock Dig Day project goals were achieved, including full bench construction in four steep, cliff-exposure sections. The Trail Champions cut some beautiful full benches, including duffing out the backslope as an important finishing touch in this tread work.

The full bench cuts help keep the trail’s treadway smooth and uniform, while better sheeting surface water during winter storms. The design of the full bench reduces excessive water runoff risk, and overall, that is good for trail users and the State Park’s plants, flowers and animals.

Next Dig Day Is Tomorrow at Little Yosemite Trail.
Registration is nearing 60 Volunteers. It would be awesome to grow that Trails Stewardship force closer to 70 for this important Dig Day. Day-of registration is available on-site.
