Gigantic Effort at Buckeye Trail Dig Day
So much gratitude for the 21 volunteers who powered the Buckeye Trail Dig Day at Mount Diablo State Park. On Saturday, December 7th, these amazing Trail Champions showed up on just one week’s notice and delivered a gigantic effort.
Yearslong trail damage contributed to safety and environmental hazards in three sections. All sections were addressed using proven trail maintenance/repair techniques, including full bench construction, berm and rut removal, water knick construction, and grade reversal construction.
That type of trail work requires a lot of sweat equity, determination and teamwork, but all of it is very rewarding when the results set the stage for a more durable, longer-lasting tread. Notwithstanding these challenges, the volunteers did not back down as the mercury rose and the summer-like sunshine hardened the soil.

Special recognition also is owed to our awesome Crew Captains who helped guide the volunteers toward achievement of the key project goals. Honorable mentions include: Pete Brown, Gintautas Budvytis, Eric Graham, Jesse Holt, Jeffrey Mulford, Bernard Smith, Justice Williams and Travis Wooley.
We also were honored to welcome David Wilcox, Board Director at Bicycle Trails Council of the East Bay (BTCEB), who worked hard and provided helpful technical collaboration throughout the entire day.

Mount Diablo Trails Alliance is building a Shared Stewardship model with California State Parks to achieve the main goals of the 2016 RTMP for Mount Diablo State Park, focusing on safety, preservation and equitable access. The model is both policy and standards-based. The stewardship activities facilitate safer and better-maintained trails for ecological and cultural preservation, and the demographics of the fast-growing, results-driven volunteer base affirm why the 2016 RTMP recommends that more singletrack trails be reclassified as multi-use Bike Friendly in the coming years.
