Sunset Trail - The Finale

On Friday and Sunday, November 17 and 19, 2023, as part of Save Mount Diablo’s 4th Annual Pine Canyon Cleanup event, California State Parks, in partnership with Mount Diablo Trails Alliance as a promotional supporter, organized 36 volunteers to finish the ambitious restoration project on Sunset Trail.

Similar to previous stewardship Dig Days on this beautiful trail near the crags of Castle Rock, there was a lot of grueling rock transport and full bench construction work. Grade reversals and water knick structures were added, and the headwaters of the trail’s main creek were armored with rocks to reduce flood risk.

The end result is a trail built-to-last, providing ecological resource preservation and safe passage for trail users in a majestic section of Mount Diablo State Park.
