Oak Knoll Trail - Beyond Epic Dig Day; Encore Announced

On February 4, 2024, California State Parks, in partnership with Mount Diablo Trails Alliance as a promotional supporter, hosted a Dig Day on Oak Knoll Trail at Mount Diablo State Park. Forty-nine (49) volunteers of all ages and trail user interests joined the effort, despite a fierce atmospheric river weather system moving through the area. The broad-based dedication and teamwork of all volunteers were beyond epic, especially the determination and enthusiasm of local BSA Girl Troop 126. Their hard work and partnership were inspirational for all volunteers on site.

A total of 10 Team Captains led their respective crews, focusing on safety and use of proven techniques. The teams helped maintain and repair the trail’s tread over a distance of 0.65 miles in one day, which was an incredible achievement given the weather conditions. An important armored drain swale crossing also was repaired for the safe passage of all trail users, while protecting the watershed.

The Oak Knoll Trail Dig Day made such great progress that an encore Dig Day has been announced for this Saturday, February 10th. Please register at our Dig Days page to participate. Key project goals related to this “finishing touches” phase include:

1) Smoothing out the 5% outsloped tread for water control and safe passage of trail users.

2) Evenly spreading the newly-released dirt (from the backslope) across the outslope to ensure grass and wildflower revival later this spring.

At Mount Diablo State Park, Trail Crew Dig Days are designed to teach volunteers how to enhance the park experience for all users by participating in trail maintenance and repairs that promote Safety, Preservation and Equitable Access. All work is conducted in accordance to California Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) Trails Handbook standards/best practices and the approved 2016 Road and Trail Management Plan (RTMP) for Mount Diablo State Park.
